STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The State College Area School Board of Directors voted by a 5-4 margin Wednesday night to a cancel a bid that had Papa John's pizza being served in the district.
The vote came after Superintendent Bob O'Donnel and business manager Randy Brown made the recommendation, citing actions by the former CEO of the pizza chain as inconsistent with the district's School Climate and Inclusive Excellence Policy.
Papa John's founder John Schnatter resigned as chairman earlier this year after he was heard on a conference call using a racial slur.
The contract was originally awarded to Papa John's Aug. 13, but per school policy the district can cancel a contract within 30 days.
According to the recommendation, the contract will be canceled by Oct. 31 and the board and director of food services will now seek other bids from other companies and will have a blind taste test with elementary and middle school students to help find a new provider.
The recommendation said that based on Papa John's proposed restorative practices and the local franchisee's commitment to inclusivity the district would reconsider a contract with the company at the end of the current school year.
